Consumerism

Plastic: unpacking the media hype | UCT News
The photo above is one of the many environmental consequences of consumerism. A lake beyond a small town collecting hundreds of cans and plastic bottles along with an assortment of plastic objects. Consumerism continues to be a growing factor to so many environmental issues. As our needs for varieties of house hold objects, tools, consumer goods and foods increase, the amount in which we produce energy and dispose or litter waste skyrockets. This leads to an increase world wide pollution, energy in factories and labor releasing poisonous gasses into the atmosphere and increasing global warming. A solution to this issue might be to limit the variety of products in which people make which would lead to a smaller variety of factories and limit energy use. I see this as a viable solution by reflecting on my own actions. If I had a smaller variety of boxes of food, I would open less boxes and limit waste.
