The photo above is of a Northern Herring Gull walking around campus scavenging for food. The animal is native to New England and can be found near most coastal habitats. The Seagull has developed a relationship with humanity, scavenging for trash and scraps rather than hunting. I wouldn’t say my understanding of the environment has changed this semester but I won’t say I haven’t learned so much. The campus’s diverse ecosystem has taught me that the variety of any habitat goes beyond the regular, larger animals we see everyday. I’ve learned that all around lays a rich and abundant variety of fungi working in all different types of ways and contain a variety of rich colors. There are hundreds of species of fungus and mushrooms, and there are a variety of types around campus. I’ve also gained a better understanding of the harsh effects of plastic pollution. I’ve come to this realization witnessing the constant plastic around campus.
